Telex is Hungary’s largest, community-funded news source. It grew out of the idea that readers should be able to learn about what’s going on in Hungary and the world at large from a well-rounded, interesting, entertaining, and impartial news source that is not dependent on any economic or political interests.

What sort of news site is Telex?

  • Provides quick, accurate, and impartial news coverage of global and domestic events.
  • Offers a wide range of news articles spanning over public affairs, the economy, sports, the latest technology, science, and culture while also bringing engaging, exciting, impactful stories to its audience.
  • Keeps a check on power by putting forth questions and informing the Hungarian public about matters of interest that affect the lives of everyone, but at the same time entertains and never takes itself more seriously than it has to.
  • Does not toe the lines of either the opposition or the government and only adheres to its own fair, critical, curious journalistic standards.
  • Resists external influence due to the position its impartial journalists and editors safeguarding its influence have in its ownership structure.
  • Leaves the decisions about the composition of the staff to the staff. Does not allow outside influence over the content either; where stories and topics are selected based on their newsworthiness and where professional standards are determined by the staff.
  • Employs enough journalists so there are enough people to cover everything important.
  • Maintains transparency in its operation where development is constant, and communication towards readers is clear and honest.

What makes Telex’s launch so important?

The freedom of Hungary’s press is currently on the rocks. The number of editorial offices that monitor those in power in a fair manner has been shrinking more and more over the past ten years, whereas the number of news outlets and radio and tv stations whose owners have ties to politics and politicians has been growing.

Every respectable democracy needs a diverse media landscape. The backbone of Telex’s staff consists of the dozens of people who resigned from Index.hu on July 24, 2020. The reason why we left was that we saw our independent operations in jeopardy. After resigning, we decided that we would like to bring a change to the country’s harsh media climate while keeping as many of us together as possible. This led us to announce a support drive, from which it became clear that we weren’t alone in thinking that it’s time for a change. Tens of thousands of people have decided to help finance this big idea, and we are doing everything in our power to make it a reality.

We aim to build a large, independent, and diverse news portal because we sincerely believe that fair and impartial news is necessary for readers to make free decisions. Such an ambitious and high-impact news source is what Hungary is in need of today.

The freedom of Hungary’s press is currently on the rocks. The number of editorial offices that monitor those in power in a fair manner has been shrinking more and more over the past ten years, whereas the number of news outlets and radio and tv stations whose owners have ties to politics and politicians has been growing. You can help change this by supporting Telex.

Running a large editorial office is incredibly expensive, costing tens of millions (HUF) a month. This is why we are asking you to support Telex’s operations with the largest amount you are able to regularly provide. If you would like to support our work but are unable to provide the minimum amount set by Barion, then try PayPal or a bank transfer. You can set any amount you wish using those options.

Transparency is important to us, which is why we regularly release transparency reports including information about what we are spending the donations on. Here was our first report.

Here’s the short answer: no, it is not considered as such. We are asking for support, and if you choose to give some, that’s all it will be.

We are unable to provide receipts as this does not constitute a provision of services.

Yes, you can, but before doing so it may be a good idea to check with your accountant because the donation cannot be considered an expense and so doesn’t reduce your corporate tax base.

Sure. We are registered as a company in Hungary, so we primarily expect donations made in HUF, but you can of course donate from an account using a currency other than HUF. The various payment service providers will convert the amount into HUF. With that said, we also have accounts in euros and dollars.
If you choose to donate in EUR, then you can transfer the amount to the following foreign currency account:
VAN MÁSIK KFT.
IBAN: HU90 1201 0374 0173 5945 0020 0008
S.W.I.F.T.: UBRTHUHB

If you choose USD, then make the transfer to the following account:
VAN MÁSIK KFT.
IBAN: HU69 1201 0374 0173 5945 0030 0005
S.W.I.F.T.: UBRTHUHB

You can certainly set up a recurring donation on our page or even with your bank. We can accept direct transfers at the following bank account:
Account number: 12010374-01735945-00100001
Account holder: VAN MÁSIK KFT. (1022. BÉG U. 7., 2/7.)
Bank: RAIFFEISEN

It’s technically possible, however, we don’t recommend this solution. If you nevertheless wish to support us in this manner, we ask that you first get in contact with us at [email protected].

The financial service fees associated with credit card payments make it such that payments below a certain amount are too costly and therefore not worthwhile.

At this point, only the supporters who registered using the Simple Pay or Barion system can log in. If this applies to you and you still can’t log in, then please write to us at [email protected] and include the email address that you used when you registered. We’ll get things sorted out.

At this point, only the supporters who registered using the Simple Pay or Barion system have supporter accounts. Rest assured, we are working on making this feature available in the near future to every supporter, regardless of how they donate.

If you support us via PayPal or bank transfer, you can modify this amount yourself on PayPal or with your bank, respectively.
If you support us via Simple Pay or Barion, you can change the amount in the following manner. Since our system is still rather bare-bones at the moment, you won’t be able to modify your card details or amount except by canceling your current donation and starting a new one with the new information. These steps will help you do that:
1. Enter here the email address you used when registering: https://tamogatas.telex.hu/en/fiokom (you can also click on the My Account menu option at the top of the page)
2. Log in to your account using the temporary link that you will have received in your email, and cancel your existing recurring donation.
3. Begin a new donation here: https://tamogatas.telex.hu/en/ (you can use the same email address as before - it won’t cause any problems)
