Support our new site, support independent press in Hungary!

At the end of July, all of us left Hungary’s largest news site, our old workplace behind. Now we are going to create a diverse, interesting, entertaining and impartial news site that is independent in every sense of the word. But for that, we need all the support we can get.

What will Telex be like?

Free press in Hungary is in a bad shape, the number of independent outlets keeping a check on power has been in a sharp decline for the past ten years as more and more newspapers, radios, and televisions have owners who are well-connected to parties and politicians.

Every working democracy needs a diverse media landscape and given the fact that Index.hu’s staff had resigned on 24 July 2020, the transformation of the well-known news site has left a sizeable void in the Hungarian public discourse. We did that because we felt that the conditions for our independent operation were no longer in place, and now, reunited with as many former team members as possible, we are working together to change the desperate Hungarian media situation and create a news site for our readers much like the one that they’ve lost.

We want to create a large, independent, diverse news site because we firmly believe that fair and unbiased news coverage is a prerequisite for our readers to freely make decisions. Today, Hungary needs a far-reaching and impactful media outlet.

Our new project, Telex, will be a site that:

  • Provides quick, accurate, and impartial news coverage of global and domestic events.
  • Offers a wide range of news articles spanning over public affairs, the economy, sports, the latest technology, science, and culture while also bringing engaging, exciting, impactful stories to its audience.
  • Keeps a check on power by putting forth questions and informing the Hungarian public about matters of interest that affect the lives of everyone, but at the same time entertains and never takes itself more seriously than it has to.
  • Does not toe the lines of either the opposition or the government and only adheres to its own fair, critical, curious journalistic standards.
  • Resists external influence due to the position its impartial journalists and editors safeguarding its influence have in its ownership structure.
  • Leaves the decisions about the composition of the staff to the staff. Does not allow outside influence over the content either; where stories and topics are selected based on their newsworthiness and where professional standards are determined by the staff.
  • Employs enough journalists so there are enough people to cover everything important.
  • Maintains transparency in its operation where development is constant, and communication towards readers is clear and honest.

What are we going to spend the funds on? Why should you support us?

We are well aware that launching Telex is an ambitious idea, and we know that it stands without example in Hungary, nobody attempted to create something of these proportions here before. We also know that this is the moment to realise this ambitious plan: our readers can get their news site back, and now is the time when we need everybody by our side who identifies with the values listed above even just a little bit.

The situation is that maintaining a newsroom this big costs a lot of money, tens of thousands of Euros per month. Our biggest expenses will be the lease of the newsroom itself, purchasing the equipment necessary for our work, paying the salaries of our journalists and editors, and providing the technical background of it all (servers, network infrastructure) in order for us to securely get the news out to as many people as we can. These components are all necessary for Telex to be able to cover all major global and domestic events.

We will be fair and square and tell you that this will not be the last time when we will ask our readers for help, and we will not make it a secret: In the longterm, we aim to convert our supporters to subscribers who know exactly what sort of articles and other content they can expect for their subscriptions.

But what we are asking now is your support for launching Telex with the highest monthly donation you can safely afford: Support free press in Hungary!

Free press in Hungary is in a bad shape, the number of independent outlets keeping a check on power has been in a sharp decline for the past ten years, and more and more newspapers, radios, and televisions have owners who are well-connected to parties and politicians. You have the power to change that if you decide to support Telex. We want to create a large, diverse, independent news site because we firmly believe that people need impartial, fair news coverage in order to make decisions freely, and Hungary needs an impactful news site that reaches many, one that is written by a sizeable staff who are free from external influence.

Your support safeguards our independence and ensures that readers have a place where they can get informed about current events - and where you can stay up to date about what is happening in Hungary if you want a news site that is fresh, smart, fair, and entertaining.

Maintaining a newsroom this big is no cheap thrill, it costs tens of thousands of Euros each month, so we would ask you to support Telex monthly with as much as you can afford.

Transparency is key, so we will provide regular updates on what the donations helped us to achieve.

Right now we are collecting the money that is necessary to launch and operate the site. Even if there will be ads on the site, the money coming in from them will not fully cover the expenses of getting something like Telex started in advance, which is why it is crucial for us to be able to start this enterprise with as much resources as we can gather.

Short answer: No. We are asking for your support, and that is what your donation is considered.

You can learn everything about that by reading our General Terms and Conditions.

No, as the donation is not considered to be a payment for goods and services.

Yes, without an issue, but first ask your accountant, as the sum is not tax-deductible and cannot be filed as an expense.

We are a company registered in Hungary, so first and foremost we are set up for receiving donations in Forints, however, as payment providers Steady/Paypal/Barion are equipped to convert donations received in any currency, you can donate even if you use a non-Forint based account. We also have a EUR and a USD account.

Of course - ask your bank about your options to set up a regular payment.

No, we will not publish your name anywhere.

We handle the personal data of our supporters confidentially and in accordance with the GDPR and our privacy policy, and we will never hand it over to unauthorised third parties. Unless you state otherwise, we will only use your e-mail address for communication about our donation program.
